Baihana is an all-female vocal trio fronted by Krina Cayabyab (arranger, musical director and the group’s Soprano 1), Anna Graham (Soprano 2) and Mel Torre (Alto). Formed in 2008, Baihana was first inspired by UK trio The Puppini Sisters who had modernized the harmonies of popular 40s and 50s female groups like The Andrews Sisters and The Chordettes. As their music evolved, Baihana grew and blossomed with jazzy influences from Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, The Manhattan Transfer and The New York Voices.
The group originally started out backed by an all-female band, “Baihana” being a Filipino word for “woman”. Karmi Santiago, on drums, has remained with the group for the past 9 years. Their current line-up includes Junji Llerma (guitar), Jesper Mercado (piano), and Julius Lopez (bass).
Baihana won their first award in 2010, a Best in Novelty for their original song “Isaw”, their album’s carrier single written and arranged by Krina Cayabyab. A second award followed in 2011 when the group won Best Jazz Band and Best Instrumentalist (vocals) at The Boy Katindig Jazz Songwriting Competition. It was through winning this award, and under Mr. Katindig’s mentorship, that Baihana came to represent the Philippines at the World Youth Jazz Festival in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2012. In 2013, Baihana garnered a couple of awards at the 26th Awit Awards, one of the most prestigious music award-giving bodies in the country. They took home the Best Jazz Recording award (for the song Bigtime, written by Trina Belamide) and Best New Group Recording Artist. The band has toured and performed in many countries around the ASEAN region as well as in Europe.
